Service

Introduction
The Three Legacies of AA are: recovery, unity, and service.
- The suggestions for recovery are the Twelve Steps;
- The suggestions for achieving unity are the Twelve Traditions;
- The suggestions for service are described in Twelve Concepts for World Service, The AA Service Manual, and Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age (https://aa.org.au/members/three-legacies/)
Dawn Patrol’s Approach to the Legacies
As part of Dawn Patrol Online’s commitment to the legacies, we study the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions every Tuesday (alternating between Steps and Traditions). Service positions have been created with length of sobriety requirements. This is done so that a person has reached a reasonable amount of sober time and for them to learn about AA and our meeting, before taking on these responsibilities.
Newcomer Service Opportunities
Our volunteer positions require a length of sobriety. Co-hosting (one month of continuous sobriety), Hosting or Chairing (six months of continuous sobriety). In addition, there are volunteer positions that support the business aspects of the meeting.
If you are a newcomer, there is still service you can perform, some of which will prepare you to start filling the volunteer roles.
Here are some suggested newcomer activities.
- Prior to the meeting you can volunteer to do selected readings or to run the timer used during the sharing portion of the meeting.
- You can just be you in the meeting. We are not here to impress each other.
- When someone else identifies as new, congratulate them in the private chat.
- Keep your eyes out for a potential sponsor and contact them in the private chat.
- Use the website to ask any questions or provide any suggestions you have about the meeting or anything AA. (https://dawnpatrolonline.us)
- Ask the trainer for information about hosting, co-hosting, and chairing the meeting. Use the Contact Trainer button below to ask questions.
- If someone shares in a way that particularly moves you, that may be a model for your sharing.
- Relax and learn, noting how the chairperson leads the meeting. It will soon be your turn.
Service Positions
Service Positions are chiefly elected positions with specific length of sobriety requirements. Voting occurs in the Group Conscience Meeting (Business Meeting), typically in November or December, with some positions being elected every other year. All the elected positions have a length of sobriety requirement, with the length determined by the Group Conscience, as well as a term of office (usually two years). You can learn more about the positions by attending the Group Conscience meeting, held on the second Saturday of the month, immediately after the regular Dawn Patrol meeting. All are welcome to attend and we look forward to seeing you there.
